It has been taught often that in the Greek, 1 John 1:7 is in the continuous present. The point is then made that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from our sins as we commit them--much as a car's windshield wiper works against rain. Is that true, or is this another example of people making too much of Greek tenses? -- Sam Hernandez
That is true. The present progressive does indeed suggest continual cleaning. Good news, eh? (And yes, some people do tend to make too much of the Greek tenses and aspects, which are not always as inflexible and rigid as wooden exegetes make them out to be.)
