In 1 Corinthians 15:4 I read about Christ "that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." What scripture was Paul referring to? — P.D.

It may be it’s the resurrection alone that is prophesied (as in Psalm 16, cited by Peter in Acts 2), not resurrection on a specific day. Yet many point to Hosea 6:2 for "the third day." I think that’s reading too much into the passage, at least judged by modern sensibilities. And yet many have noticed a "third day" pattern in the Old Testament, visible also in Genesis 22:4 and Jonah 1:17—both passages foreshadowing the death and resurrection of Christ.

It's certainly easier to see the pattern looking backwards (from a post-resurrection perspective) than by reading the O.T. without specific knowledge of Christ.
