What Bible are you reading these days, Doug? Last year you were going through the Holman Christian Standard Bible. I bought that and am really enjoying it.

I still like the Holman the most of all the English versions. But this year I am reading other translations. One of them is the New English Translation, which was originally published on the internet. The Bible has around 30,000 verses, and the NET has some 60,000 translation notes! Not that every translation decision is perfect, but at least the translators give their reasoning in virtually every case. The Bible is useful and readable for both the beginner and the person familiar with the original tongues.
