I would like some help with the Strong's NT Word 1135, gyne, meaning woman or wife. I know that in French, the word femme can mean both woman or wife. The sentence makes it clear which it is. "Les femmes..." will apply to women. "Leur femmes..." means wives, etc. What is the situation in 1 Timothy 3:11? Is there something like that to clearly indicate if it is referring to women or wives? --Dominique Ibanez

The Greek, like the French, is ambiguous. Either translation can work. And so, as is so often the case, context is king! Most commentators take this to apply to the wives of the deacons, and I think they are right.
