For me it has never been clear that 1 Cor 11:4 is specifically talking about women praying and prophesying in the church services. It seems to me that in 1 Cor 11:17 he starts talking about the church meetings. What are the things that make you certain he is talking about women praying and prophesying in the church service itself? Thanks a lot, -- Chad Winchell

I could be wrong, but I see no reason to assume 1 Cor 11 is referring to anything but the church meetings. The distinction between speaking "at home" (?) and speaking "at church" is an artificial one. (Especially since churches usually met in homes anyway!)

11:16 appeals to common church practice. Moreover, the discussion on head coverings seems irrelevant if Paul is describing interactions in the Christian home or in some other non-public setting.
