This wealthy nation possesses up to 25% of the world's oil reserves, and enjoys long life expectancy (76 years on average). It is also well located among the Middle Eastern nations, bordering Yemen, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt. Population is 27 million, of whom about 7 million inhabit the three largest cities: Riyadh, the capital (3.5m), Jiddah (2 m), and Mecca (1m). 1.2b Muslims worldwide pray towards Mecca five times daily; they are orientating themselves towards Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam.
The majority of Saudis are Wahhabi Sunnis. Although currently the nation is 93% Muslim and 4.5% Christian, there used to be a large Catholic Christian population, which was expelled when Islam gained control in the 7th century. Non-Muslim religious gatherings are strictly forbidden.
As Operation World reports, 'A massive Islamic missionary effort is coordinated by the Muslim World League in Mecca. Billions of dollars are spent every year to propagate Islam around the world, aid to countries considered sympathetic, building mosques, sending missionaries, literature, radio, etc. The Saudi government denies Christians the liberty to share their faith, yet demands this liberty for Muslims living elsewhere. Some of the world's largest printing presses are in Saudi and print out 28 million Qur'ans annually for worldwide distribution.'
Please pray for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today!
