Honduras was originally a Mayan culture before being colonized by the Spaniards in the 1500s. (Columbus reached this land in 1502.)

Honduras borders Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Population is over 7 million, the largest city being the capital, Tegucigalpa (1 million). Other cities include San Pedro Sula, Trujillo, and La Ceiba, to mention a few (and omit a lot). Honduras received independence from Spain in 1821, but of course retained the language of her conquerors.

Life expectancy is 71. Literacy is 76%. Roman Catholicism dominates the religious scene (97%), with most of the usual syncretism, compromise, and unrest that characterize Latin American church life. The Protestant minority is about 3%.
