What is the original name of Jesus' mother? The Muslims say it's Maryam.
I was recently reading John (in Greek). In John 11:19 and 20, I was struck that she's Mariam [Miriam] in v.19, but Maria in v.20. One name is Semitic, the other Greek. Perhaps there is a theological reason for this--or this may be simply a matter of style. And yes, in the Qur'an she's Maryam (sura 19).
In English we call her Mary—yet this obscures the origin of her name. She was, after all, named after Moses's sister Miriam. (Just as Jesus was named after Joshua.)
I'm not sure how much this matters in the long term, though still, in the case of names, I regret that Bible translators felt the need to preserve tradition over precision.
