This nation of approximately 30 million, having recently experienced yet another round of war, has infrastructural, military, spiritual, and relational problems in abundance. 98% of the population is Muslim, and "holy war" is well known in this land. In the past 30 years, over 1 million have been killed, 2 million maimed, and 4 million children have been orphaned.
Afghanistan’s infant mortality is second worst in the world, and it’s the only one among the world’s worst 20 nations in regard to this statistic that is not from the continent of Africa. Median age is 18 years and life expectancy at birth is just under 45 years.
The nation’s economy is recovering from decades of conflict but despite the progress of the past few years, Afghanistan is extremely poor, landlocked, and highly dependent on foreign aid, agriculture, and trade with neighboring countries. Afghanistan’s living standards are among the lowest in the world (CIA World Factbook).
The need for intercessory prayer is obvious. In addition, poppy production is booming, and over 70% of the world’s opium today comes from Afghanistan! Please say a prayer for this ravaged nation today.
